The Awakened Mind Meditation Center traces its roots back to the many meditation groups which met in living rooms and borrowed spaces across the Kalamazoo area. Groups have come and gone but many of the students have remained, migrating from one place to another.

Several years ago, we began to inquire about the possible benefits of establishing a Dharma Center in the Kalamazoo area. It was envisioned as a learning resource center to serve anyone interested in meditation and Buddhism. Such a center would be available to anyone who wished to pursue their interests in these topics. It could also be a place where teachers and monks could visit, stay in residence or otherwise offer their experience and wisdom.

A small group was formed and decided to bring the idea of a center to the attention of the Buddhist Association of Southwest Michigan. The Buddhist Association in turn established a Dharma Centre Committee which began exploring the feasibility of a center and helped raise funds for building a center. Many locations were considered and countless meetings were held to test the community's interest in a dharma center. But, progress was slow and financial considerations and other problems were not easy to solve.

Then, in 2004, David Greeley realized that the Sunday night meditation group held at his house might serve as the ideal location for a dharma center. Thanks to his vision, generosity and dedication he designed and built a meditation space on his property and opened its doors to the community. The Awakened Mind Meditation Center is now up and running and awaiting your presence!
